Stroke Judges Needed!!
The Grandview Neptune team is in deep need of stroke judges. These folks help the team by letting the coach know when technique needs to be improved, so the swimmers can work to achieve qualifying races. When you are watching USA Swimming on TV and you see officials dressed in white or white and blue at the end of the pool lanes raising their hands, you are identifying stroke judges. In fact, all the officials you see on the deck at the Olympics started as stroke and turn judges (We call them stroke judges for short.). So Neptune swimmers follow the same rules as US Olympians! Pretty Cool, huh?
Well, we can’t have swim meets without stroke judges and starting officials. And we need officials! If you want to be a stroke judge this season, all you need to do is watch the USA Swimming online videos and receive on-deck training from a judge. When you feel comfortable officiating on your own, we start you slowly with the less technical swim strokes to build your knowledge and confidence. Soon you will feel ready to do the more technical strokes because you already have been watching races with the eye of a judge and have learned the rules. We typically have our league referee Greta Alderson present the videos and give us helpful suggestions, but this year she is confident in what we are doing to train our officials. Also Jenny Hare, our league president, has offered to do on-deck shadowing at our Pool during the Prosser Piranhas’ swim practice tonight at 7:15-9:30! This is a great way to start learning the rules and recognize qualifying swims! Please show up for that training if you are interested in learning from her. If you wish to go on deck with me tomorrow night during our swim meet, that would be outstanding! If you want to learn to be a judge, you will not sign up online for another swim meet job because a stroke-judge-in-training is a job.
